Dedicated to the ocean, The Oceanarium in Lisbon is located in the Parque das Nações, Portugal. Peter Chermayeff of Peter Chermayeff LLC directed the Oceanarium’s conceptual design, architecture, and exhibit design. Built into the pier on an internal sea, it has been designed to resemble an Aircraft carrier.

Birds, mammals, fish, cnidarians, and other marine organisms totaling about 16,000 individuals of 450 species – are all included in this oceanarium’s collection.

A large tank with four large acrylic windows on its sides, and smaller focus windows located to make sure it is a constant component throughout the exhibit space, is the main exhibit. Its large depth allows pelagic swimmers to swim above the bottom dwellers, and providing the illusion of the open ocean. Both temperate and tropical fish can survive in the temperature of the tank. Sharks, rays, chimaeras, various species of tuna, barracudas, groupers, and moray eels are only some of the fishes found in this exhibit. Sunfish is what this oceanarium is known for.

Four different habitats with their native flora and fauna: the North Atlantic rocky coast, the Antarctic coastal line, the Temperate Pacific kelp forests, and the Tropical Indian coral reefs are housed in four tanks kept around the central tank. An additional 25 thematic aquariums with each of the habitats’ own characteristics are found throughout the first floor. Two large spider crabs and two sea otters named Eusébio and Amália and the Sunfish are the important species found here.

The best place for ocean and animal lovers, this oceanarium attracts several tourists. Its splendid build gives one the feel of an open ocean even though some of the species present here would not have normally met.
